Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT)
Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) is an advanced laboratory technique used in In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) to screen embryos for genetic abnormalities before implantation. PGT helps ensure that only chromosomally normal and genetically healthy embryos are transferred, increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy.
At DYU Advanced Fertility & Smart IVF Center, we offer state-of-the-art PGT to improve pregnancy success rates and reduce the risk of genetic disorders.
Who Needs Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT)?
- Couples with a history of recurrent pregnancy loss or miscarriage
- Individuals or couples who are carriers of genetic disorders
- Women of advanced maternal age (35 and older)
- Patients who have experienced multiple IVF failures
- Couples seeking gender selection for family balancing
- Individuals with a history of chromosomal abnormalities
Types of PGT
1. PGT-A (Aneuploidy Screening)
- Screens for chromosomal abnormalities (extra or missing chromosomes)
- Helps prevent conditions such as Down syndrome, Turner syndrome, and Klinefelter syndrome
2. PGT-M (Monogenic/Single-Gene Disorder Testing)
- Detects specific inherited genetic diseases
- Recommended for families with a history of cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, thalassemia, or Huntington’s disease
3. PGT-SR (Structural Rearrangement Screening)
- Identifies chromosomal rearrangements such as translocations or inversions
- Prevents miscarriages and implantation failures due to unbalanced chromosomes
The PGT Process
Step 1: IVF & Embryo Development
- Ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval
- Fertilization using IVF or ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection)
- Embryos are cultured for five to six days until they reach the blastocyst stage
Step 2: Embryo Biopsy
- A few cells are carefully removed from the developing blastocyst
- The biopsy is sent to a specialized genetic testing lab for analysis
Step 3: Genetic Screening & Embryo Selection
- Chromosomally normal and disease-free embryos are identified
- Only the healthiest embryos are selected for transfer
Step 4: Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET)
- The selected embryo is transferred into the uterus in an optimized cycle
- The pregnancy test is performed 10-14 days later to confirm implantation
Benefits of Preimplantation Genetic Testing
- Increases implantation success rates
- Reduces risk of miscarriage by selecting healthy embryos
- Prevents genetic diseases in future children
- Improves IVF success for older women or those with multiple failed cycles
- Enhances family planning options (including gender selection when applicable)
