Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (PESA)
Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (PESA) is a minimally invasive sperm retrieval technique used for men with obstructive azoospermia. This procedure involves aspirating sperm directly from the epididymis, a structure that stores and transports sperm from the testicles.
At DYU Advanced Fertility & Smart IVF Center, we provide state-of-the-art PESA procedures to help couples achieve parenthood through Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).
Who Needs PESA?
- Men diagnosed with obstructive azoospermia due to:
- Vasectomy or failed vasectomy reversal
- Congenital absence of the vas deferens
- Infections or blockages affecting sperm transport
- Patients requiring surgical sperm retrieval for ICSI treatments
- Men who prefer a less invasive option compared to open surgical sperm extraction
The PESA Procedure
Step 1: Preparation
- The procedure is performed under local anesthesia or mild sedation.
- A fine needle is inserted into the epididymis to aspirate sperm-containing fluid.
Step 2: Sperm Retrieval
- The aspirated fluid is processed in the laboratory to extract viable sperm.
- If live sperm is found, it can be used immediately for ICSI or IVF, or frozen for future use.
Step 3: Post-Procedure Care
- Patients can resume normal activities within 24–48 hours.
- Mild discomfort or swelling may occur but typically resolves quickly.
Benefits of PESA
- Minimally invasive with no surgical incisions
- Quick recovery and minimal discomfort
- High success rates for sperm retrieval in obstructive azoospermia cases
- Can be performed alongside female partner’s egg retrieval for IVF
- Option to freeze sperm for future fertility treatments
